Description: Located near City Park, this beautifully restored house was the home of the famed French Impressionist master Edgar Degas during his time in New Orleans from 1872 to 1873. Here Degas created 22 paintings of his New Orleans family, and it is here that he began exploring Impressionism. This house is the only known home or studio of Degas in the world that is open to the public. Built in 1852, the Degas mansion was the home of his maternal relatives, the Musson family, prominent cotton brokers in New Orleans. In the 1920s, the home was divided — one wing was moved 20 feet to the side, and the large residence was transformed into two homes. An award-winning restoration was completed on the main Degas House, and the second portion of the original home is currently being restored. The Degas House is on the National Register of Historic Places. Guided tours of the home are conducted by appointment only. Tour length is approximately one hour and includes a viewing of the award-winning documentary, Degas in New Orleans, A Creole Sojourn. All proceeds benefit the Edgar Degas Foundation. Suggested donations are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens, $5 for children and students. Groups can be accommodated with advance notice. The Degas House is also available for overnight stays. Each of the seven guestrooms has a private bath, fresh flowers and a number of welcoming amenities. The elegant setting provides a wonderful venue for private parties, weddings, and receptions for up to 150 persons. The Degas House is located at 2306 Esplanade Avenue, a 15-minute drive from the historic French Quarter. For more information, call (504) 821-5009 or visit www.degashouse.com.
